Build A Rainbow
Build a delicious rainbow! Pick a food for every color. Add banana or yogurt clouds. Get creative; the sky's the limit!Activity:Arrange 5 or 6 foods into the colored bands of a rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet). Be sure to choose foods that are appropriate for your child's oral motor, chewing and swallowing skills. It's about the experience, not about the bite, but if your child does decide to try a new food, we want it to be a positive experience.Let your child be in charge. Offer choices of ways to put out different colors, then let your child make the choice or offer a new suggestion.Language and Senses:You can start this activity in the grocery store, or have the ingredients pre-selected and gather the ingredients from your fridge with your child. Talk about how the foods feel. Do they feel the same or different? Are they bumpy or smooth, cool or warm?Concept: ColorsTalk about the colors of the rainbow and the colors of food. With some foods the color stays inside the food (lemons) and with other foods the color comes off on your plate or your hands (pomegranate seeds). Can your child think of any foods are different colors on the outside and inside?.Song:Sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" or a song about the colors of the rainbow.Enjoy and happy food-play!
