When we take something out of context we can start to see it in a whole new light. This isn’t to say that you can put some cauliflower or broccoli in an ice cream cone and it’s going to magically taste like ice cream and your child will start gobbling it up. Texture is often the primary reason we choose or refuse foods. We may crave the way something feels in our mouth and, though we like the taste, it’s not our primary reason for wanting it. Or we hate the way something feels in our mouths and even if we loved the taste we still wouldn’t put it in our mouths because of it’s texture. Kids are the same way. We want them to taste foods to see if they like them, but during those tastes kids are also deciding if they like the way the food feels and that may be their primary reason for choosing or refusing it when they see it again. Negative memories or associations with smells or tastes can keep us from trying foods and make us immediately say “I don’t like it.” The way to reverse that instinct (and it is a hard-wired instinct that helps to keep our bodies safe) is to create positive memories and associations with foods.
We create positive memories during positive play, when we’re having fun, feeling calm, relaxed and joyful, and we try new things when we’re curious rather than fearful. The point of this kind of positive play is to gain a comfort level with foods on different sensory levels and to connect the sensations of foods to positive feelings.
